Huge flames engulfed the school playground on the campus of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Hamilton Square Wednesday evening, sending swirling smoke into the air that was visible for miles.

Nottingham Fire Company sent multiple fire trucks to the site at the back of the church’s property along Nottingham Way. Hamilton police also responded.

Nottingham Fire Company Chief Gary Dempster said he saw the column of smoke coming from playground before even receiving a call about the fire.

sadly, I can't say who would do something like this. unfortunately, there are some very sick people in this world. I will be praying that these senseless acts do not continue and that everyone has a safe school year.

Some kids hang out at the playground, they probably threw their cigarette an didn't put it out properly. That's the most reasonable answer. i mean if someone wanted to do a hate crime or something they would go for the actual school or the church. SGG needs to catch those kids who hang out there after dark and get some answers from them.

I was randomly watching television when I get a text from my friend. It was a picture. Of a fire. And I was so amazed! I'm going into 6th grade, so we really cant go on the playground anyway, so I honestly feel bad for the younger kids and my brother. And right before school, too. Everyone is going to be talking about it. I hope that we can get a new one for the little people who adore the playground. It was a place we all could go at halloween and school stuff and have fun. I cant wait to see what's going to happen. And I cant beleive it's my school! (lolz) Anyway, Although it's cheesy, im glad no one got hurt.

I go to school there. Im one of the eight graders. It's not that disappointing to us but the lower grades are gonna be really upset. The playground has been there since I was little. Who would do something like this?

We were able to see the smoke from inside the Chick-fil-a at Hamilton Marketplace. We had no idea what was burning. As horrible it is that this happened, I'm glad to see no one was hurt!

Yeah, it does. Wow, my brother starts kindergarten this year; He's going to be dissapointed. I don't think anyone really cares besides the little kids, as long as no one got hurt. That playgound has been there for a long time..

I just took my daughter to play on that a few weeks ago : (

It was a really nice setup, adjacent to a little grove of trees, but I'm sure the chopped up tires all around it helped the blaze along. I could see the smoke from the Sayen school field. Good job Hamilton Fire Fighters.
