  • TCA basketball standout Dondre Whitmore will go junior college route

    Tags:

Trenton Catholic Academy senior guard Dondre Whitmore has made it official: he will attend Harcum College beginning this fall, with the plan of matriculating at a four-year program in 2012. This possibility was first reported in “In the Huddle” last month.

The 5-foot-8 guard will undoubtedly get better over the next two seasons. He also hopes to get bigger, both height-wise and in the weight room.

He has formed a four-year starting backcourt with fellow TCA senior Frantz Massenat, who will attend Drexel University on scholarship. Whitmore also has Division I talent and Harcum has been churning it out in recent years. This season, the Bears went 26-3 and became the first Northeast team since 1974 to be ranked No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I ranks.

Whitmore, Massenat and TCA stand two wins away from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament of Champions title, having received a first-round bye in the tournament which brings together six state champions. Second-seeded TCA will play either third-seeded University or sixth-seeded Mendham in the TOC semifinals Friday at Rutgers University.

TCA's girls' basketball team, like the boys the Non-Public 'B' state champion, bowed out of the TOC first round Tuesday night with a 49-40 loss to North Hunterdon in Toms River.

    In the Huddle

One of the unique aspects of sports is that people always look for the next best thing. You know, the next Michael Jordan, the next Tiger Woods, the next Mia Hamm. What makes Mercer County scholastic sports so intense and special is people don't get ahead of themselves. They draw battle lines. County titles matter. Township bragging rights mean even more (you know who you are, Hamilton Township). The athletes learn they can't get to tomorrow without focusing on today. This blog is designed to show you their efforts and will put you in the huddles across Mercer County. By the way, aren't you the next Arielle Collins?
