“The Foyer of the Forgotten,” a new program on WWFM The Classical Network, a radio station of Mercer County Community College, pays homage to the plight of little-known European composers through music and literature. Hosted by classical pianist Paul-André Bempéchat of Lawrenceville, the program reflects the breadth of his research at Harvard University. The hour-long show airs Saturdays at 9 p.m.

Bempéchat studied at the Manhattan and Juillard Schools of Music and the Sorbonne in Paris, where his mentors were the noted Artur Balsam, Felix Galimir, Nadia Reisenberg, Marie-Claire Beltrando-Patier, Pierre Brunel and Isabelle Cazeaux. He is author of “Jean Cras, Polymath of Music and Letters,” (Ashgate, 2009), the first critical biography on the 20th century French composer and decorated Great War hero. A highly-esteemed composer during his time, Cras enjoyed the same stature and celebrity as Fauré, Debussy and Ravel.

A contributor to “The Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians” and numerous academic and performing arts journals, Bempéchat has held research and lecturing appointments at Harvard University, where he remains an affiliate at its Center for European Studies, and at the Westminster College of the Arts of Rider University. As a soloist, he has played recitals at philharmonic halls, the Vienna, Caramoor and Holland Festivals and continues to give masterclasses nationally and internationally. Bempéchat recently performed Franz Schubert’s last three sonatas in recital at Westminster Choir College’s Bristol Chapel, one of the programs on his 2011-2014 touring schedule, all the while teaching gifted students locally.

WWFM The Classical Network, operating from Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, began broadcasting in 1982 and grew quickly into a full-time classical music network serving New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and portions of Delaware and Maryland, as well as reaching FM listeners in Colorado and around the world through streaming on wwfm.org. In the fall of 2008, the station launched JazzOn2, a 24-hour jazz station available on its HD channel 2.
