Throughout the months of July and August, teenagers from a program called “JusticeworX” volunteer their time at a Princeton Day Program operated by Enable, Inc., an agency devoted to supporting individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives throughout the central New Jersey area. JusticeworX is a weeklong service immersion experience offered by The Center for FaithJustice. It is designed to help high school age students develop life skills and put faith into action. Their motto, “training for transformation,” is what the program is all about.
For the past six summers, JusticeworX has been sending youth to volunteer with Enable. The youth assist 15-20 adults with disabilities at the Day Program which encourages individuals to choose activities they want to do and to explore their personal interests. Each week a new group of JusticeworX volunteers arrives and begins building relationships with the Day Program participants by playing games, doing crafts, sharing a meal and creating friendships. At the beginning of the week, the group is asked to plan a project that the participants will enjoy at the end of the week. Some of the projects planned by the volunteers have included tie dying shirts, painting hats and baking. Altogether, each volunteer group contributes around 160 hours a week.
In May, JusticeworX was honored at Enable’s 20th Anniversary gala celebration because of their consistent dedication to the organization.
Enable, Inc. serves nearly 450 persons with disabilities and their families through in-home services and supports, group homes, day programs, respite care and other options. For more information about Enable and the services it provides, visit www.enablenj.org or call (609) 987-5003.
