It may not reach the pitch of a Flyers-Devils NHL game, but on March 22, Hamilton’s firefighters and police officers will face off at Sovereign Bank Arena for the first ever Ryan’s Cup, benefiting Ryan’s Quest.

Ryan’s Quest is a nonprofit organization founded by Hamilton residents Maria and David Schultz to raise awareness and fund research for boys like their son Ryan, who are afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Kevin McElroy, a firefighter with Mercerville Fire Co. who had worked with Trenton Devils officials before, pitched the idea of doing a hockey game to David Schultz. With the help of Officer Mark Watson of the Hamilton Township Police, and a team of firefighters helping to sell tickets, the idea took hold. McElroy thinks it will be the first matchup of Hamilton police and firefighters in any sport in years.

The game will precede an ECHL game between the Trenton Devils and Cincinnati Cyclones. Doors open at noon for Ryan’s Cup, and at 3 p.m. for the pro game. Tickets are $15 for lower bowl seats and $20 for premium seating, which offers admission to both games. Play it Again Sports is sponsoring Ryan’s Cup.

On April 30, the First Annual Ryan’s Quest Golf Outing will be held at Mercer Oaks Golf Course. For more information, call (609) 947-3611.
