“Distortions: Contemporary Media Art from Mexico,” TCNJ’s second-ever exhibition featuring all-international artists, will run in The College Art Gallery October 28 through December 2.
“Distortions” presents the techno-centric creations of six Latin American artists with a broad focus on globalization, technology, and the taking of an aesthetic-political stance. The concept originated in discussions between Director Sarah Cunningham, Associate Professor of Art Ricardo Miranda Zúñiga, and Karla Jasso, curator of the Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City.
“The exhibit compels audiences to consider the ways in which the artworks’ particular places of creation, integration of technologies high and low, and political reflections merge to create a unique artistic vision that portrays Mexico today,” Cunningham said.
An opening reception will include a 5:30 p.m. experimental music performance and a 6 p.m. panel discussion that will involve all featured artists for the first time in the gallery’s history.
The artists are Iván Abreu, Marcela Armas, Ale de la Puente, Gilberto Esparza, Gerardo García de la Garza, and Iván Puig.
“Distortions” begins Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. The College Art Gallery opens Tuesdays through Thursdays from 12 p.m.-7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
