September, 1916: Sparks World Famous Shows visits quiet Erwin, Tennessee with Mary, the “Largest Land Animal on Earth.” Relating true historical events, fifteen characters share the jubilation and wonder of the circus, and tell of a town-wide parade gone horribly wrong. In poetic, chilling direct address, Elephant’s Graveyard questions how good people can, if only for a moment, turn into monsters–how human thirst for spectacle can cause utter destruction.
Elephant’s Graveyard is a 2008 play by George Brant, a recipient of the Keene Prize for Literature and the David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award. A review by the Austin Chronicle says: “As the play moves…the spinning of the story becomes more of a choral work, requiring the actors to be concerned not only with their own individual speeches, but with the collective shaping of an image.”
